Dr. Richard Mason, Jr.

For the past twenty, years, The Honorable Dr. Richard Mason, Jr. has been working to improve the lives of youth and their families in a number of settings.  He is a visionary leader, manager, and Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Georgia with experience in mental health, education, the court system, and business.  He is successful at establishing creative partnerships to enhance services, obtain funding, and create community awareness.  Dr. Mason is currently an Associate Professor at Hampton University where he serves as the chair of the Department of Counseling. 


Dr. Mason is actively involved in the Hampton Roads Community.  He served as a “Child and Adolescent Expert” providing insight to the kids on WAVY TV 10’s “Kid Talk” Show, and can be seen speaking to a number of youth within the various schools throughout Hampton Roads.  Dr. Mason was appointed to the Virginia’s Promise Advisory Board by Former Attorney General Mark Earley where he worked with Former Secretary of State General Colin Powell’s America’s Promise Campaign to bring resources and services to youth throughout Virginia.  Dr. Mason is a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and 100 Black Men of the Virginia Peninsula. 


Believing in the difference that is made in the lives of children when Parents connect with the School, Dr. Mason is actively involved with Hampton City Schools. He has served on several committees including the Principal’s hiring committee, School zoning committee, elementary and middle school alignment committee, and the student support services community initiative committee.  Additionally, Dr. Mason has been very involved with the PTA.  At the elementary level, he served as the Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the Machen Elementary School PTA.  In addition, he served two terms as President of the George P. Phoenix PreK-8 School PTA.  Under his leadership, both PTA’s were able to provide funding for educational opportunities for students at each school. In May of 2018, Dr. Mason was elected to the Hampton City School Board and began his first term as a School Board Member on July 1st.


Dr. Mason has a passion for mentoring.  In previous years, he has served as the Chair for the fraternity’s Omega League, which is a mentoring program for high school boys.  In 1997, for his outstanding service and commitment to the fraternity, Dr. Mason was awarded Omega Man of the Year.  Immediately following, he was recognized in 1998 as Greek of the Year by the Peninsula Pan-Hellenic Council.  For his outstanding commitment to excellence in all areas, Dr. Mason was recognized by Hampton Roads Inside Business in 2004 as one of the Top 40 Business Leaders under 40 in the Hampton Roads Area; In 2006, he was awarded the Social Action/ Humanitarian Award by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; And for his academic achievements, also in 2006, he was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and in 2007 he was Inducted into the Chi Sigma Iota International Counseling Honor Society.  In 2011, Dr. Mason was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award by the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.


Dr. Mason is a graduate of Hampton University with a BA in Political Science and an MA in Agency Counseling. In addition, he earned an Ed.S. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the College of William & Mary and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University. Additionally, Dr. Mason holds an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) Certification through the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. (CCE) and is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and is a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC).  


Dr. Mason resides in Hampton with his wife Dr. Kellie Mason and their son, Richard Mason, III.
